How Many Padel Courts Are There in the UK? City-by-City Data

The UK has 1,825 padel courts across 551 venues, according to the Lawn Tennis Association's May 2026 count for Great Britain. Our own open-data atlas finds 1,779 courts on public booking platforms, in 470 clubs and 313 towns, as of 21 September 2026. The two totals are built differently and still land 46 courts apart, which says something on its own: in Britain, most of the courts that exist can be booked from a phone.

The UK count, city by city

These are the towns with the most courts in our atlas, plus the capitals of Scotland and Wales, counted on 21 September 2026. One row is one town as the booking platform spells it, so Greater Manchester boroughs such as Bolton, Wigan or Stockport are counted separately from Manchester.

London moves fast enough to show it in a single week: the snapshot we publish on the London page, dated 14 September, listed 27 clubs and 109 courts. Seven days later the live count is 31 and 123.

How we count, and what we miss

• What is counted: every club our workers find on public booking platforms with a UK address, and the number of courts that club lists. The first UK club entered the base on 19 May 2026.
• Coverage: 470 clubs, 1,779 courts, 313 towns. For 1,582 of those courts we know the type: 1,088 indoor, 494 outdoor.
• Perimeter: the LTA counts Great Britain. We count the UK, so Belfast's 33 courts are in our total and not in theirs.
• Limits: members-only venues with no online booking are invisible to us, and a club that lists another racket court next to its padel courts could inflate its line. Read each figure as a dated snapshot.

What the numbers say

The North builds bigger than London

Manchester, Liverpool, Leeds and Sheffield add up to 180 courts in 26 clubs. London has 123 courts in 31 clubs. The average London venue has four courts; the average Manchester, Liverpool or Leeds venue has seven. London still has more courts than any other British city, but the large venues are going up in the North. The LTA's last regional breakdown points the same way. When Britain passed 1,000 courts on 17 July 2025, London and the South East had 297 of the 1,004 courts, about 30%. North and West Midlands had 179, South and South West 172, North and East Midlands 153, Central and East 124, Scotland 45 and Wales 34.

Britain plays indoors

Of the 1,582 UK courts whose type we know, 1,088 are indoor: 69%. In the Italian part of the same atlas the split is close to half and half (1,533 indoor, 1,481 outdoor). An uncovered court in Britain earns little from November to March, and operators are paying for roofs. The LTA says it has put more than £7.5 million into court construction, part of an £18 million total that delivered 112 courts at 57 venues.

About 550 players for every court

The same LTA release that counts 1,825 courts counts one million players. That is roughly 550 players per court. The court total has grown quickly (68 courts in 2019, 870 at the end of 2024, 1,553 at the end of 2025, per the LTA), but players have grown faster: 15,000 in 2019, 400,000 at the end of 2024, 860,000 a year later.

Our availability report, built on 1.18 million availability observations up to 3 July 2026, measures what that ratio does to a weeknight. Across 923 evening slot types in UK clubs, a free evening slot disappears 30% faster than a morning one. Only Italy, at 46%, is tighter among the five countries we cover in depth.

If you are trying to play rather than count, the number that matters is your club's booking window. Of the 470 UK clubs in our base, 126 open bookings 7 days ahead and 107 open 14 days ahead; the median is 13 days. Those horizons are detected automatically from how far ahead each club's calendar can be booked, so check your own club before relying on them.
